A History of Serving Aviation Since the 1930s

Historic Rand Airport

Fields Airmotive’s heritage extends back over 80 years, starting as an aircraft operating company at Baragwaneth Airport, Johannesburg in the early 1930s. Originally part of Aircraft Operating Company (AOC) of London, the operation began with aerial survey work using a Puss Moth and a Dragon Rapide. Due to limited internal aircraft maintenance demand, the team began offering services to other operators.

Old Fields Hangar

In 1935, APTL was created to expand into technical representation of overseas aircraft and engine manufacturers. During WWII, staff joined the South African Air Force, returning post-war to re-establish operations at Rand Airport, where Fields remains to this day. The Hunting family acquired shares in AOC, and their legacy spans oil, shipping, defence, and aviation sectors.

Historic Workshop

In 1952, the company was renamed Field Aircraft Services (Africa) Pty Ltd and moved into premises vacated by South African Airways. A key milestone came in 1978 with the start of a technical assistance agreement with Rolls Royce for the RR Dart engine – a partnership that endures.

Rand 1949

From a 1949 Rand test cell photo to modern training, Fields Airmotive works with Rand Airport’s apprenticeship school, mentoring the next generation through practical learning.

In the 1990s, Hunting PLC began divesting non-core ventures. Portions of Hunting Aviation (Pty) Ltd were taken over by private investors, leading to the formation of Fields Airmotive cc. The company continues its legacy in engine and airframe overhaul at Rand Airport, proudly serving clients across Africa and beyond.
